Minister
James Flaherty officially Opens Unique Children's
Clinic in Whitby
The
Honourable James Flaherty, M.P.P. officially opened
the new offices of the Kids Clinic on September 10th
in Whitby. The clinic specializes in Children's developmental
and behavioural pediatrics and aims to provide much
needed services to the Durham region and beyond.
The
Kids Clinic focuses on the developmental and behavioural
areas of pediatrics in order to understand and foster
the development and maintenance of optimal cognitive,
social and emotional functioning of children and families.
This goal is achieved through close collaboration
with several medical and non-medical disciplines that
address a similarly broad goal through their own unique
and complementary perspectives.
In
addition to specialty physical illnesses in children,
we are working to provide expertise and guidance regarding
school learning problems; disruptive behaviours; attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (A.D.H.D.); developmental
impairments; difficulties with peer relationships;
and social and emotional concerns associated with
chronic physical illness.
Aside
from its clinical endeavors, the Kids Clinic is the
first clinic of its nature in Canada to actively engage
in community-based behavioural and developmental pediatric
research. Current studies include work on paternal
exposure to organic solvents and sensory integration
dysfunction.
"The
work being carried out here at the Kids Clinic will
have a positive impact on children and families throughout
the Durham Region and the province," said James
Flaherty, Whitby-Ajax MPP. "This clinic is certainly
something special and will be held up as a model for
others to pursue"
"Ours
is the first of its kind in Canada to take a multidisciplinary
approach to developmental and behavioural pediatrics
outside of a public teaching institution," says
Dr. Sohail Khattak, staff Pediatrician, "We are
truly unique in every aspect, and I encourage members
of the community to come visit and take advantage
of our services."
"In
a 'one stop' setting, children, teens and adults can
take care of their medical and/or psychological concerns,"
says Dr. Greg Carter, psychological associate at the
clinic. "They are sure to find this collaborative
style especially user friendly."
The
clinic has an enthusiastic and diverse staff including
a pediatrician, psychologist, psychology students
and an administrative team with a wealth of experience.
