GET RID OF THE GUILT
Perhaps the biggest roadblock for
effective discipline of ADD children and teens is guilt.
Too often parents allow guilt to get in their way and render
them totally ineffective in dealing with the difficult child.
Here is the guilt cycle that often perpetuates bad behaviours.
1. Parent explodes because he or
she cannot take the bad behaviour anymore.
2. Parent feels guilt because he
or she overreacted or was excessively harsh.
3. The parent allows the child to
get away with misbehaviour because of his or her guilt over
the explosion towards the child.
4. The parent feels tension build
up because he or she is not effectively dealing with the
misbehaviour.
5. The parent explodes and the cycle
starts all over again.
6.
It is very important, when dealing with ADD children, to
break the guilt cycle. Do this by dealing with difficult
behaviour whenever it occurs. Do not allow the tension to
build up in you to the point where you explode.
